Hi Franklin, Generally speaking Promaster and Quantaray lenses are junk and should be avoided. Sigma, Tamron and Tokina make some good value lenses if you select them with care. In particular the Sigma EX lenses with HSM (Ultrasonic focus motors), are very good lenses optically and they focus only a little bit slower than Canon's own USM lenses and have a lower initial cost than a comparable Canon lens. I can only speak about the better lenses as my experiences with the low end are limited. You MUST check out Photodo's test reports, PhotoZone's review summary and Photo Net's lens reviews.
