I think that EOS 5/A2 doesn't use Speedlites' assist light but instead
its own, so if the flash is not at the same distance as the body it can
make difference. I don't have manuals here in my work, but I can confirm
it later.

Distance alone shouldn't make a difference, assuming the flash is not in
manual mode.  The light is metered when reflected off the film (not of
the item outside the camera).  Let us know more details. Dave Buyens
