I think that EOS 5/A2 doesn't use Speedlites' assist light but instead its own, so if the flash is not at the same distance as the body it can make difference. I don't have manuals here in my work, but I can confirm it later.

Distance alone shouldn't make a difference, assuming the flash is not in manual mode. The light is metered when reflected off the film (not of the item outside the camera). Let us know more details.
