Hi Alex,
You worry too much about the technical stuff my old friend. Gotta stop
shooting newspapers and blank walls :^)

What you found though is actually the case. The M9 does have very good low
light focus ability and matches the EOS3 in most respects. It suffers
somewhat when it comes to tracking speed and predictive focus, particularly
with subjects moving diagonally across frame for some reason. Big Minolta
teles are not competitive either which is part of the problem. As you know
Minolta's AF lens design differs from the others considerably. The M9 has
some very clever features but due to the overall range offering less than
the other two (particularly when talking DSLR's), and absolutely no pro
backup, they remain a poor choice for advanced shooters IMO.

The only thing I miss is the excellent Minolta mailing list. Almost as good
as the EOS group.....
