Your missing the point: of course it would work with film.

Moving the rear element away from the film just means the "beam" from
the rear element would be designed to converge more slowly than
before.  It would still come to focus on the same plane.

As a direct consequence, as Jim said, the lenses would have to be
bigger / heavier.

I'm still confused as to how the 1Ds seems to cope fine edge to edge
yet <TROLL> the poxy little sensors of amateur versions </TROLL> are
bothered by the comparatively small angular variation.

Why didn't they make the sensors curved and be done with it ;o)
