Would anyone care to share their experience with the (one or more) 550
light as a macro flash? I have a Tamron 90/2.8 that I dearly love and use
mostly in available light. With my FD set-up I am more accustomed to using
a (non-TTL) flash with a variable power setting at very low - 1/16, 1/32 -
power settings as fill flash for very close macro work, where the light
cannot be all that far from the subject, due to shadowing, cable length,
etc. Can a similar approach be employed with the 550? Or whatever
provisions are there? I currently have a 420EX, and get fairly decent
results from that, but I want more control.

Hi Ken,

You can set the 550EX to a manual exposure or you can also dial it + or -3EV from the
exposure and use auto metering with this flash compensation.
This depends a lot on the camera you are using too. On the EOS 3 you have to turn off
the automatic fill which will override your auto-flash exposure compensation settings.
I use the 105mm Sigma macro and have use the 550EX with it. Works very well. Try it
out.
