I didn't do that. I went the E-TTL route. But I can not see why you could
not do that with 550. Like Peter K said below...

But then again, in the "lesser" cameras, you can not turn the automatic fill
off at all. So you will have to live with the auto-flash exposure
compensation - which I've never had problems with, although I do understand
that in some situations (macro shooting might be one of them) you might want
to have all automatics out of the way.

One thing would be, if you are not sort of money, to buy the 550EX and keep
the 420EX also. That way you'd get 2 flash heads to work with as 550EX could
command the 420EX wirelessly. With one of the flash cords (I do not remember
their names anymore) you could position both of the flash heads very close
to the lens and get almost ring light kind of effect.
Only problem with this is that you could not command the 420EX in manual
mode - you'd have to go E-TTL here.
