I realize this is straying from Willem-Jan Markerink's original
question, but...

I own a Canon 1D, originally purchased from a seller in China with no
USA warranty.

Unfortunately, it had some exposure and flash communication problems and
had to be sent to Canon for repairs while still under warranty.

When I contacted the original seller about the problems, he told me that
the camera would need to be returned to Canon in Japan to be fixed.
Before attempting to return the Camera to the Chinese seller and on to
Japan for fixes, I called Canon USA about it.

The Canon USA representative explained to me was that certain high-end
Canon equipment (not all Canon equipment) carries an international
warranty that should be honored, as implied in the wording,
internationally.

Thus, the in-warranty repairs were honored (at no charge) via Canon USA
because of what Canon USA referred to as the 1D international warranty.
I'd have to assume that with something like the 1D, it wouldn't matter
where you were in the world, as long as there was a Canon factory-level
service center available (and in-warranty fixes were needed) that the
service center in question would honor the international warranty.

Again, this is according to what the Canon USA service center
representative told me and how my 1D in-warranty repairs were handled by
them. (Again, with no specific USA warranty on this camera when
purchased).
