L lenses are NOT always white, however, *all* L lenses
have a RED ring in the front. The 400 mm DO, even
though white, has a GREEN ring in the front - to
signify that it uses DO elements. So far, that is the
ONLY feature which can be used to distinguish an L vs
a DO lens - not the lens color but the RING color.
(What will happen when Canon comes out with an L lens
with DO elements ?)

Also, some Canon lenses have GOLD rings and some have
SILVER - not sure how Canon categorizes them thus -
but all those are neither L nor DO. And there is at
least ONE Canon lens which is SILVER in color (neither
black, nor white)

Another batch of useless bits of trivia .....
