The RAW format is a proprietary format for Canon. Therefore, you need special software to read this format. There is no way around it. This is true for any digital camera that uses a proprietary format (NEF for Nikon, etc). Some 3rd party programs do support proprietary formats, though. Note that if you have a program that can read raw files from your D60 there is a chance it is not able to read files from the 1Ds in case Canon has made some modifications to the file format.
