Steve,
  The file format for the pro Canon digitals is *.TIF.  What you are opening
is just the thumbnail, not the photo.  Whatever you do, don't save what you
open that way to the original file or you will lose your capture.
  You do not need the Canon software.  However, I believe that the version
of C1 required to decode 1Ds files is different than for your D60 (you need
the pro version).
  If you don't want to use C1, use PhotoShop CS, the Adobe Camera Raw
decoder is built in.
  I've heard good things about Canon's new Digital Photo Professional (DPP)
that you can download from the Canon BeBit site, though I haven't tried it
for much more than a trial spin.  Canon's new EOS Viewer/Utility (EVU) has
also been raved about, supposedly better than C1.  Each of these was
introduced with the 1DII and both work with the 1D and 1Ds (but not your
D60).
  You will like the photos you get from the 1Ds, especially when shooting
raw.
