AFAIK, the only grips that had problems were the very early ones produced
and sold from around August to November of 2004. The problem was
particularly noticeable when using a big lens on a tripod with the tripod
mounted to the body/grip rather than the lens, although plenty of folks had
problems with them off tripod as well.

You can call Canon Customer Service or CPS and they can tell you how to
identify whether you have the newer version grip, which I've not heard of
any problems with.

As for how the grip uses batteries, I always thought it used one completely
and then switched to the other, although I've never really paid attention
and this might be completely wrong. My own experience (using a 2 second
review and occasional "chimping") is that I can get about 150 onboard flash
pics from a regular battery and 350-500 per battery with no flash. Most of
my half dozen batteries are 3rd party ones with higher capacity like the
BP-511A, but I very seldom (never?) have had to change batteries in a single
day.
