Are you using microdrives or real flash memory? Flash memory is extremely durable. My entire wallet of cards lived through the washing machine AND dryer once without a single issue. My 4Gb microdrive was much less durable, though. Plus I'd expect the lifecycle of the card interface to be quite a few more cycles than the camera cable connection, not to mention the risk of yanking the camera off the desk with the cable, etc.
