My camera came back today by Fed Ex. So it took Canon quite a bit longer to provide an estimate than its web site claimed, but it made the repair quicker than promised. According to the service details on the paperwork that came back with the camera, Canon replaced the shutter unit and release unit, and "Other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning, mechanical adjustments and parts replacements were carried out." It definitely looks cleaner, and it looks like they cleaned the sensor as well.
Also, I had previously reported here that I called Canon to ask how long the work was warrantied for and was told only 90 days. The paperwork I received today indicates that Canon warranties this repair for six months (for the same failure only), provided I send the equipment and that same paperwork back to Canon on my own dime. I took a few test shots around my house, and the camera seems to be working well. I'll give it a more thorough run-through Friday night, but so far, I am pleased with the repair (other than having to pay for it!).
