Guys.
I passionate night flyer myself and familiar with the area, I must say one
does not need a GPS to fly at night through the LA Basin.
Although I find it quiet a task to make it through Class Bravo airspace
with
just a radio, maps and compass, it is possible.
I flew myself on several occasion just by compass through the nights and,
if
carefully planned - nothing wrong with that.
I assume that the careful planning Tim did was watching the weather,
having
no wind and no fog .
Guess this was the luck factor he had.
Cruising along the coast down there is pretty straight forward, day or
night. One side is highly illuminated, the other side isn't.
