Well I don't know. It might be that I still have problems with my recently overhauled engine. But a run-up at altitude (4000ft) lately showed 50rpm less then close to sea level.

This is a good question.  Does the RPM vary with altitude/temp?  I was under the impression that while increase in <density>altitude causes reduced power output, the RPM basically stays the same as a result of the lower resistance of the thinner air.

I could measure a 2200 RPM with a 7148 McCauley fresh from the prop shop and
a newly overhauled C85.
But the rpm varies with altitude and temperature.
