First, I'd suggest calibrating your tach.  (Lots of tachs are way off.)
Be sure your tach is reporting facts.  Most A&Ps nowdays have a tach
checker - a small digital gadget that counts prop blades.

Next, I'd check the static rpm.  According to Aircraft Specification
A-787, if you have the McCauley 1A90CF or 1B90CM, allowed static rpm for
your Alon are not over 2375, not under 2250.  If you're outside that
range you have something wrong.

If the engine is running properly, toward the low end of allowed static
rpm, you have a cruise prop.  Toward the high end of allowed static rpm,
you have a climb prop.  If you're rpm doesn't match the prop pitch,
maybe there's something wrong with the engine.
