The "ding dong" list as you put it still supposed to be about flying ercoupes. If people want to get into a long thread of conversation discussing the merits of wearing googles or scarves while flying their Ercoupes, that belongs on the [email protected] list and is ON TOPIC. If people want to the list want just technical discussions and not have all that hangar flying, then [email protected] is the place to go. I moderate (which means I approve all mesages going through it) this list because there are quite a few people on this list with a great deal of technical knowlege that will leave it if it strays off topic. I don't moderate the social ERCOUPE list. But I do try to foster an environment which stays on topic. If people want to discuss immigration policy, non-flying politics, the merits of Willie Nelsons latest album, the price of tea in China or whatever, then I'm sure there are appropriate lists that they can join out there filled with people who care about that topic. Go and join those lists. The reason it is in everone's mutual interest to stay on topic is because if you don't then the people who you want to talk to about Ercoupes WILL START TO LEAVE THE LIST. As a community, it is to our mutual benefit to keep things on an even keel and on topic.
