Scott,

Yep!  Having some decisions pre-made cuts down your reaction time enormously and can save your bacon.

I once knew a professor who was doing research on the effect on reaction time of having pre-planned your options.  He was finding that thinking about the options right before the event drastically shortened reflex times. I’ve tried to do that in all the years since – I pre-make all the decisions I can then just contemplate them as the situation approaches.  I once blew out the graph on a reaction time test by using this method – much shorter reaction time than the operator had ever seen.

Also, the self-discipline to think through the situations in order to make the decision options helps a lot in improving your “skill” level.

Ed,
When I come dragging it in, I have the frame of mind that if my engine so much as coughs, the nose comes down immediatly. Kind of like a chopper in an auto-rotation. They have around a 1/2 of a second to get the collective out. Either way, coupes are good at short field. I flew mine into an 800 foot field at my friends house. But boy did I practice first.
