Greg, I do like the Garmin 196 and have been using mine since January but I have had a problem with it. It shuts itself down for the heck of it sometimes so I sent it back just befoire I left Atlanta for Oshkosh. I asked for a new unit but it was repaired instead of replaced, and now I am having the same problem again. However when it works it is great. I like the user interface and everything else about it. The one thing the Garmins don't have are the obstructions. That could come in handy if you live near a big city like I do, or the mountains. I know this sounds like a mixed bag but I am sure my problem is not indicative of their normal quality. I had a Garmin GPS Pilot 3 for 3 years and it worked fine the whole time.
