I have both AirMap 500 and GPS 196.

I have the airmap mounted on the instrument panel door directly in front
of
the pilot control wheel. I have had the 196 for about a couple months. I
am
planning on using it in my RV panel, but have been playing with it in the
Coupe.

The numbers take up less screen space. In my opinion, the numbers
on
the Garmin are much too big.
For my flying (low - typically 2-4K feet) in Chicago area, the
obstructions are a BIG plus.
I find it easier to find the nearest airport with the airmap,
could
be that I have been using it for years.
When not in use, the antenna covers the screen which protects it.
You need some kind of case for the 196.

196
The screens have a lot of ability to change what is displayed.
They
are more or less locked on the airmap.
The size is overall better. The battery on the 500 takes a lot of
space below the unit.
The screen resolution is better, but with the larger numbers, a
lot
of the screen is wasted.
        The battery life is better
If you drive a lot, you can purchase street modules and put it in
ground mode with steering directions.
When you get close to an airport it shows the arrival corridor,
versus a simple runway extension on the airmap.

All that said, what I would really like is a color 196.
