Hey love2gofly: (You didn't sign your name) I went through sort of the same
scenario about two years ago. I had purchased a bunch of parts and a
re-buildable Ercoupe from a friend, and he had bought everything from an outfit
that had received it as a gift. Originally, it had been given to a nephew of a
person that died. I was fortunate enough to find the original owner, and then
with letters to the FAA, describing what had transpired, I was able to get a
title and registration in my name.
I recommend writing to the FAA registration branch
and describing your situation. They should be able to give you detailed
information as to what is needed to obtain a registration.

The other option would be to call the AOPA (assuming you are a member) and ask them what procedure they recommend.
