Warn, Have you tried a good Google search based on the previous owner's name? It's amazing what you can find, sometimes. You might well find information including articles naming his kids and where they might live. Lots of stuff can sometimes be found. It might help you clear the title. AS your grandfather's heir, you might be able to get access to bank records from even that far back. As a final option, this might be a good candidate for a "data plate upward" restoration in which an aircraft that is totaled out gets rebuilt by major components from other aircraft. That might be excessively easy in this case.
