The first fatality in a powered airplane was when Orville Wright was demonstrating the Wright two-place Flyer to the Army at Fort Meyer on September 17, 1908. Orville was injured when a propellor departed the airplane, causing the plane to crash, and his passenger, Lt. Thomas Selfridge, was killed.

Hi Folks,

I can research this, but I thought that one of you who
are also interested in aviation history might know.
What was the first plane that had seat belts and/or
shoulder harnesses installed?

Seems like I remember one of the Wrights' or Curtis'
planes carried the dubious distinction of being
involved in the first pilot fatality - which pointed
up the need for strapping in the pilot. Anyone who
knows the correct history on this, please enlighten
me.

Thanks,
Spook
