When cell phones first came out, I didn't realize it was not legal to use them in the air.  I used one at maybe 3000 MSL over Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  My phone bill listed the location as Peoria, Illinois.

I soon learned how ignorant I had been.  I'm a bit embarrassed, actually.

I don't know squat about formulas so my input is more practical.

I have tried once to use the cell phone in the air at about 2500 agl and couldn't get a signal.  This was in the midwest where it was pretty flat.  On the other hand, I have used the cell phone at the top of a 22 story building in the midwest, glass on all sides, where I could actually see several cell towers and there were probably a lot of them within line of sight.  I would think that the phone would reach out and touch several towers at once from that building, but it never seemed to be a problem for me.  I have trouble thinking that being up a lot higher would create any other type of problem.  I would also think that there is an optimum height from which the cell phone will reach a tower because of the limited power of the cell phones.

I know of one professional pilot that won't call out on his phone when in the air, but he does answer it in the air.  He generally fly's a King Air.  I don't think answering is any different than calling out.  Does anyone else have a story about people they know that have used their phone in the air with or without problems?

On another note, Spook, would you try to contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], please.  Thanks.
