Susan,
I think I fully understand and I am in complete sympathy with your
feelings. It is rather disappointing to see some of the posts that
appear. I don't ride motorcycles. Never have, never will. But, I am
offended a lot more by some of the "attack mode" messages than I am by
an enthusiastic message that someone feels expresses a joyous moment
to be shared.
That said, I must add that I won't be joining your new web board. I
find that ercoupers.com fully meets my personal requirements for
keeping up to date on the Ercoupe community. I wish you well with your
new site, just as I hope that Jason's site is well read. I hope that
you, Spook, and anyone else feels free to continue to post here
whatever they feel will interest those of us who read ercoupers.com
regularly. I'm sure that is why the board was created and continues to
exist at no cost to all of us. It is too bad that some in the
community are abusive, but I am sure that they feel they are "right"
and thus they want to take ownership of what should and should not be
said. To those people, I can say that perhaps it might be best for
them to create and host a web site of their own, rather than trying to
take over what someone has created for us to freely share.

I fully understand your thoughts and preferences, John. I would vastly
prefer that it didn't seem necessary to set up a complementary list
where people could feel safe to post things they would prefer to be
able to post here. Unfortunately, we have an absentee owner (highly
understandable, given his day job is working for Microsoft which I am
sure is very stressful and tiring) who isn't active on the list to let
it be known what is OK and not OK according to his own preferences. I
have the highest respect for him and his public service in setting up
this free list. Unfortunately, the ListServe it is on is getting
crotchedy (dropping some people unexpectedly, not allowing others to
post, messages not making it into the archives) and it was felt that
perhaps it is time to have some "back-ups" available to the Coupe
Community in case the ListServe crashes and is unable to be
resurrected.
I agree with you that it would be far better for those who choose to be
rather consistently "crotchedy" in their censorship of others to go off
and form their own list where they can attack each other to their
hearts' content, but I don't realistically see that happening. Life
is just too short for putting up with all this attack crap, but I don't
see anyone working to stop those who are guilty of it and who are
driving other members away in their doing so.
I've had too many private communications from people who don't want to
post here any longer because they are simply tired of the attacks. I
think that's why you see a lot more activity on the Tech list now than
you've seen on the Flyin list for awhile now. Tech is a lot safer -
just questions and answers on technical-related issues which it is
difficult to take exception to (although I've seen a few arguments over
there as well). And keep in mind the number of "unsubscribe" requests
which have appeared on this list over the past couple of months - ever
wonder why that is happening?
If Jason sets up an email server on his website, I will happily combine
forces with him at that time. I for one prefer to receive individual
emails instead of trying to remember to go to a website to check to see
if there are any new postings, which is why I chose to set up a
YahooGroup (also a free public service). I chose YahooGroups simply
because I am very familiar with how they work, so it is fairly easy for
me to set up and run a group there. Again, the new group is not
designed to compete with this one, but simply to provide a
complementary service for those who desire a "less censored" list (and
where the censorship does not seem to follow any set rules, making it
nearly impossible for anyone to figure out if they are safe from attack
or not if they post something).
Those who would like to join the new list are very welcome. I would
vastly prefer that people maintain their active membership here on
these lists, and simply use the HangerFlyin list as a complementary
list for more free-wheeling not-necessarily-strictly-Ercoupe
discussions. It is simply a way of helping to serve the Coupe
Community in a way that is not currently being met.
Blue Skies!
