What John said is great.

In addition, when you save a file as JPEG (.jpg), most programs give you the
option of what "quality" level you want to use to save it - in other words,
how much compression to use on the file.

I've found that when e-mailing photos or putting them on the web, it's darn
hard to SEE the difference between quality level 10 and 3.  Sometimes I even
use quality 2, 1 or 0.

The lower quality level due to the high compression methods can make the
file size a LOT smaller.

Also, it's more polite to send a 30KB file to a list than a 2MB file, or
even a 90KB file.

For the web or e-mail, I use these general guidelines:  6x9" or 4x6" at 72
dpi then I save it as .jpg using quality level 3 or below.
