I'll side with Spook & Don on this one. IMHO - Flyboys is a good film and is to be ENJOYED! The nits are relatively insignificant in the overall scheme of the film, particularly when you compare this film to most other Hollywood 'flying' film (and many of the glaring technical errors in those!)!!!

Many critics gave it mediocre reviews mostly because they felt the romance and personal relationships were too 'hokey' & perhaps idealistic & cliché.

My feeling is that the film is more representative of the times & setting, and the relative innocence of the people (not long out of the Victorian era). Let's face it, many of the well worn war time clichés that the critics carp about probably DID have their beginnings in WWI - the first relatively modern war. Our society as a whole has almost certainly become far more worldly and cynical than people were during the run up to WWI. Furthermore the critics (cynics?)are reviewing a film about the early 1900's from the perspective of nearly a century later. I find the reviews FAR more revealing about our own mind set & cynicism than about the film itself.

I enjoyed it, and would see it again.

Right on the money, Mr Don. Well said!

Nothing is absolutely perfect. Please folks, just
enjoy the movie. Or give your tickets to Don and I and
we'll go again.

I disagree with your assessment of FLYBOYS, Alan.
The "slips" and "flaws" you mentioned are
insignificent "nits" IMHO. Same for the
"fake"zepplin! Where on earth would Tony Bill get a
real one ?! Anyway, it looked real enough for me to
thoroughly enjoy the scenes it appeared in. As for
falling out of an airplane in inverted flight, I
personally have hundreds of hours of inverted flight
without hanging in my shoulder straps or seat belts.
No one suggested that the movie fighter pilots were
inverted at less than one G. Ever try a barrel roll?
There are several scenes in the movie where the
pilot of an airplane under close attack from behind,
does a "very strange looking maneuver" which
instantly reverses their positions and places his
airplane behind the enemy, in firing range. It
happens that fighter pilots were practicing this
identical maneuver 50 years after WW I. It is called
a "high g barrel roll" and is essentially
uncoordinated flight throughout. I often, but not
always, entered a spin when performing it/teaching
it. Of course it is a "last ditch maneuver", and a
far better tactic would be to not get into such a
situation.
I wholeheartedly recommend the movie to all Coupers
and respectfully suggest that they sit back and
enjoy it, rather than looking for "flaws". Many of
us see enough of those while shaving each morning.
