David,
From Teterboro to Alegheny County is 269 miles by air which works out
to about a three hour trip by air at 90 kt.
You have to consider that in 1946, no new cars had been produced since
1942 and the just lifted war-time speed limit across the country had
been 35 mph. Following WWII, new cars were in first built in late fall
of '45 and were not in plentiful supply until the 1950s. And even the
new cars in those days were not as comfortable for traveling as are
todays air conditioned, power-everything vehicles. Car radios could
seldom pick up a signal fifty miles or so from a major city unless you
were driving at night. There were few expressways and no Interstate
Highways. The main roads were mostly two lanes. The Pennsylvania
Turnpike, built in the late 1930s, was a much longer route than a
direct, great circle air route. I would estimate that the trip by
private car would have been 10 hours or so, by train probably seven or
eight hours, and by air (in a DC-3) a couple of hours (if you could
afford the price and put up with the limited service of two or three
flights a day.)
Flying from New York to Pittsburgh (or a similar distance almost
anywhere in the country) in a private plane on your own schedule still
probably makes sense (and good business) for a lot of today's business
travelers.

I have an original Ercoupe advert that specifically points out how nice
it would be to just be able to fly from your office in New York to your
factory in Pittsburg.
Must have been a popular route.
