It is an interesting story.....especially for me. 
 
As a youngster during WW2, Dad was an amateur radio Ham  W3CYK, (later  
W4CYK, W4JDT, K04AM)...and while one could not transmit during the war, one  
could 
listen to planes flying over Europe... I remember pilots talking about the  
damages they had incurred, etc.,  as they flew back to England.
 
This, too may be faulty memory  :)  :).
