Gary, Welcome! You're exhibiting excellent judgment and your analysis is spot-on. Fred Weick, the designer of the Ercoupe, was 6' 4" and he fit OK. You will probably not want thick seat cushions. With well shaped but not-thick cushions, you should fit fine. As you said, you can modify the cushions yourself. Coupes are, foremost, fun to fly. Since you're planning to keep flying bigger and faster planes, I'll assume you're not in need of a Sport Pilot capable plane. That leaves all the later models with the higher gross weight eligible for you. Those models did not get the bump in price that the SP eligible planes got - bad for the sellers but god for you. You should find a sparse but adequate supply of such Coupes. Take your time looking and search widely. Above all, get an A&P who is NOT beholden to the seller or anyone at the seller's airfield to do a good pre-purchase inspection for you. Do that right. I've seen a couple of people who skipped the pre-purchase inspection who ended up, after spending a bunch on attempted repairs, donating the plane to a museum. Know what you're buying. You'll find some good info at: http://ercoupe.org <http://ercoupe.org/> and http://edburkhead.com/Ercoupe/index.htm And, there are a LOT of people here who're happy to help and answer questions.
