Al,

I'm sure part of it has to do with rising costs and
actually, my county has a large percentage of people
below the poverty line according to Census
information.

Neverthess, given that Avgas is pretty close to the
same price in two neigboring counties within CA, I
find it interesting that the attitudes of the flying
crowds are so different. I'm certainly not a
sociologist or a psychologist and I don't feel that I
can come up with an accurate assessment of what is
causing the differences. But I am curious and I do
speculate about it.

Percy's correct about the Oregon Ercoupe Erforce. It
was especially vibrant when our friend Bob Saville was
alive. Several here knew him. Every year he would have
an Ercoupe (but all were welcome) flyin on his own
personal grass strip. His little airport was like
something out of the 20s or 30s and such great fun to
visit. His events always seemed well attended by
coupes and others including antique cars, motorcycles,
and even gyrocopters. Bob was a particularly good
cheerleader for Ercoupes. It was impossible to talk to
him or email him on the subject and not get
enthusiastic about the nifty little planes.

I realize that, understandably, not everyone has the
money, time, and inclination to work tirelessly for
Ercoupes and GA in general. Bob was one in a million
and I miss him. But his efforts do show how one person
can accomplish a great deal. His enthusiam was so
infectious that others found themselves willingly
getting involved.

Kudos to Bob and all the other folks who do so much.
You know who you are. :-)

Spook
