Ron,
Mr. Smith at 83 was willing to live his life to
the end. That is so much more than most people
can say. Yes flying is dangerous. Mountain
flying is more dangerous. Mr. Smith and most of
us are willing to accepted that danger as part of
the price we are willing to bare for the joys
flying brings us. There are some of us,
including me, who want to live in the
mountains--and fly Ercoupes in the mountains.
Sir, your comments on Mr. Smiths actions reminds
me of a saying we had in Vietnam.
For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the protected will never know
Sir, I do feel for you, because either you have
never tasted life or have forgotten its
flavor. Please Sir, do not criticize those who
are willing to fully live the few years they were given.
I dont think I would mind going the way Mr.
Smith did at 83 doing something I love. What
better joy could one get from life, but to live it to the end?

WHY ANY PERSON WOULD EVEN THINK OF FLYING IT IN
A SINGLE IS FAR BEYOND ME, AND I HAVE BEEN
FLYING LIGHT AIRCRAFT OVER 40 YEARS . NEVER OVER THERE.
SO THE ELT DIDN'T WORK ? SO WHAT'S NEW ABOUT
THAT. ANYONE WHO WOULD PUT THERE LIFE AND TRUST
IN A TOY LIKE AN ELT NEEDS TO STOP AND THINK.

Unfortunately the 83 yr. old pilot didn't make
it. His recently recertified ELT didn't go off
and he hadn't filed a flight plan. It took four
days to find the wreck. He was found,
unfortunately too late ,by the cell phone
company pinging his cellphone before it went dead.
He was flying over extremely rugged territory.
Please flie flight plans or use flight following when you can.
