Thanks for the replies, they've helped.  Looks like the O-200 crank (and other parts) STC may be the way to go with my 85.  One of the reasons I asked was that the O-200's are plentiful and cheap.  I figure with some help, the crank conversion with new cylinders is going to cost me around $8K.

"removing the C-85 and replacing it with an O-200"

Sorry folks, I did not get that.

In that case, putting a straight 0-200 into a Coupe requieres it to covert it to a 415-D model.
The STC applies to my knowledge only to the 415-D.
However using the O-200 (crank) STC for your C-85 engine would give you the freedom not to convert the plane in that manner.
Something to consider, especially with the sport pilot rule in mind.

No, Hartmut, Al is talking about removing the C-85 and replacing it with an O-200.  There is an STC to do this, but it is for D models and higher.  C's and CD's do not qualify.

The O-200 STC is for C-85 engines to enable them to use a 0-200 crank and
stay a C-85.
Per timing of the ignition, the power output will be de-rated.
So, the STC does not change your engine designation. It would be still a
C-85 in the eyes of the FAA, not in yours of course.
And per type certificate of the 415-C Coupe, you can have a C-85 in a 415-C
, provided you do the changes as specified in the TC.

Here's a question for you big engine guys. Does the coupe need to be
designated a D or higher to use the O-200 STC? I like the idea of the
engine, but I don't want to move my C up to a D. How about a CD? Will

make

a big difference when I start the engine work, which will probably be

soon.

Thanks
Al
