I believe the company is AEROTHERM based in Spearfish, South Dakota. They
make a preheater which operates on a timer which can be activated by
a phone call. Aerotherm. com

Moving from Texas to Virginia produced a new problem for me - really cold
weather.

OK, but “really cold” is relative.  From here, Virginia is “really mild”.  ;)

That said, If you use the right oil, you do not need to preheat unless the core
engine temperature drops below about 20*F.  Since winter temps in VA can have
some pretty big swings, I’d use a multi-weight oil, 15W-50 or 20W-50.

The only way I’d recommend to keep the engine always warm is in a heated hangar
(with no preheater).  The problem with a preheater is that you set up a little
micro climate system where the warm parts evaporate water and the cooler parts
condense it.  In addition, there is always the risk of fire if it is left
unattended.  If you must preheat, do it right before you fly.  Using a timer
doesn’t help much, unless you have a way to start the timer remotely before you
intend to fly, although you still have the unattended issue.  There is a
company that makes a device to remotely activate a preheater, based on pager
technology, but their name escapes me.
