Oh no, I would never make any changes without getting the proper FAA approval. My query here was of a technical nature rather than legal. "How can I" rather than "could I" or "should I".
As previously stated, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My goal is to own a 1946 Ercoupe on the outside and a 2010 Ercoupe on the inside. The art deco panel (and the pretzel yoke) is as hideous to me as it is beautiful to you. I appreciate all the pics and comments from everyone.
