Hi Donald,

It's easy to get confused as to what is and is not "required". It's far better to have someone refer you to an authoritative source of information that you can review and absorb correctly than to be "told" a half truth by someone who, in good faith, genuinely (but wrongly) believes it to be the whole truth.

If the Ercoupe is Serial No. 1622 or below, the original trim was one of two methods of "loading" the elevator with a bungee. These planes must have the later trim system installed that operates a movable tab on the elevator if the engine is upgraded to 85hp. It doesn't matter whether you have the narrow or the wider trim tab if the plane is a 415-C or CD operating at 1260 lb. gross. These planes DO NOT have to have the additional baffles around the oil sump for cooling with 85 hp to be in compliance with Type Certificate 718.

On the other hand, the D, E and G Models (and the 1360 lb. gross Light Sport STC), each "Normal Category" aircraft operating at 1400 lb. gross weight with 85 hp MUST have the wider trim tab AND the additional three baffles around the oil tank installed to be in compliance with ATC 787 (or 1360 lb. gross by STC).

So the "true or not true" answer is properly "it depends" ;<)

William R. Bayne

Somewhere I was told that you had to increase the trim tab and put on some cooling shields down around the carb. True or not true?

Ok I know it is an old topic, but I am restoring an Ercoupe and would like to convert the C75 to a C85, the SB M47-16 does not state anything about the starter and generator. The TCDS of the plane tels you the starter and generator are no longer allowed, i.a.w. note 308 and 107. The TCDS of the plane does, as far as I can see, not give any replacement P/N for both.
The TCDS of the engine states the same starter P/N for both engines.
Also the P/N of the generator is useable on both engines i.a.w. the engine TCDS although, if I had to change it, I would go for more capacity or probably an alternator.

I am studying to be an A&P, only have the practical exam to go, but even I am lost here.

Who can help me out?

Ruben
