I should point out that I got some replies and this was solved. I didn't understand what was meant by $PREFIX in the INSTALL file and so I wasn't including /opt/etherlab as part of my ln -s command. My command was:
ln -s etc/init.d/ethercat /etc/init.d/ethercat and my command should have been ln -s /opt/etherlab/etc/init.d/ethercat /etc/init.d/ethercat Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.
