There are two issues if we can get a student working on Etoile.
One is whether the project can be done mostly in summer (2 months).
The other is the usefulness of this project.

So for Azalea, xGI support is nice.
But I would prefer that Azalea can use GNUstep AppKit for drawing,
and let GNUstep handle the xGI stuff in backend.
But technically it may not be doable.
So the bottom line is that I don't know the answer for now.
All the possible solutions will be evaluated after the first stage is done,
which may be too late for the summer code of this year.

As for other projects, I would like to see a port of Beagle based on
LuceneKit,
  which is somehow usable.
File Manager (OpenSpaceManager) is also very nice,
but I prefer it to be just a file manager.
In my opinions, GWorkspace try to do too much stuff.
I am also thinking to have a dock along with Azalea.
That's another email I will send later.
The menubar is also quite important in my opinions.
It will shape the first Etoile desktop environment.
