Well, the reason is that GNUstep-make (or GCC) does not handle framework very well. So in GNUmakefile, we have to link to something like -Lxxx.framework/Versions/A/ -lxxx.
On my system, all the frameworks have a symlink in GNUstep/System/Library/Libraries, so they don't need -Lxxx.framework/Versions/A/. I believe that's supposed to be the default behaviour for GNUstep-make.
