There is a usability argument, which I thought I had already outlined. In left-to-right reading order countries, left is perceived as back, right is perceived as forward. This is why we put confirm buttons on the right, and cancel buttons on the left, for example. Close is an action which is psychologically 'back,' by its very nature, and so should go on the left.
