AFAICT, for acpi, you just need to locate and parse a few files.
Unfortunately, the files could be under /proc, or /sys, depending on
how you configured your kernel, etc.

You may want to look at libacpi by Nico Golde:
<http://www.ngolde.de/libacpi.html>, which should smooth over the
harder parts.  It seems to be under an MIT-style license, so it should
be fine to incorporate it.
