By which I mean: is this just an effort to unify runloops (which would
make integrating things like gstreamer easier), or does glib's runloop
have any realy advantages over GNUstep's loop?

The (dis)advantage is that glib runloop can be nested and you can insert preparations before the runloop get locked with the files that are being listened this may not be a familair behavior thus required by some libs. This should be solved by a special input sources and a little modification in NSRunLoop as well but the idea was rejected by GNUstep development team.
