Hi to everyone involved in this project. I've just got in.
Welcome Alex :-)
I didn't know about Étoilé, but when browsing the web trying to find
GNUstep apps and so on I finally ended up on the Étoilé project
website. Someone had thought about it first and it wasn't vaporware,
it wasn't dead. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel, and probably both
projects had much more similarities than differences. So I contacted
Nicolas and now I'm part of this.
ok.
One of the mockups has been updated
to match Étoilé, at least, somewhat, as I still don't know much about
the whole thing.

Well, we have something similar in mind currently. Except for the
black look & feel, at this time we are set on Nesedah as the default
theme, extra themes could be provided in the future though. We have a
pane 'Appearance' in Look & Behavior preference application, one of
the three preference related applications in Étoilé. This pane offers
the possibility to change the theme, but right now the code to do
this hasn't been yet written. Moreover Camaelon needs to be
integrated in gnustep-gui to support theme change 'on the
fly' (without relaunching application).
You can take a look there. There are two mockups: one, which is only
possible with transparency enabled, and the other, without it.
I'd like to know what you think of these mockups. I'd also like to
know about two things:
* Is there a plan to make different icon themes possible?
(Tango)
As Nicolas outlined it, IconKit has been created to provide such
possibilities. But nobody is currently working on it and some
debugging is needed to have it in a usable state.
* Is ÉtoiléWildMenus themeable? I have taken a look at the CVS
snapshot, and it seems if you want to replace the theme you have to
overwrite files. Maybe it could be integrated with Camaelon for easier
theme-ability?
Yes, that's another thing to be done :-)
On Azalea side, Yen-Ju has made some work (patch for gnustep-back
iirc) to have windows with themed title bar. But the feature itself
still needs to be added to Azalea I think.
What I want to provide to this project is great looks and great
usability, together with Alexander (who designed the theme you see on
the mockups-if you are using WindowMaker, you might want to check
this: http://www.box.net/public/goup4ndx46).
Exceptional usability is one of the reason behind creating the Étoilé
project. You can probably help the project by working on various
visual aspects too. Jesse Ross is currently in charge of this stuff
(he designed Nesedah theme, Étoilé web site etc.), but more help on
this front is welcome.
However it's important to note that at this stage various development
tasks needs to be accomplished before being able to really spend time
on design/usability issues.
Cheers,
Quentin.
