Overall I like the idea, it fits quite well with Étoilé as I envision
it.
My main suggestion would be to display the Shelf (the part with
stacks) horizontally. I have two reasons in mind:
- more space
- faster visual scanning (we can catch more elements with less eye
movement)
Unlike for the plugins vertical area, I also think labels are
mandatory for the Shelf otherwise you suffer from Mac OS X Dock poor
usability.

The recycle bin could be more useful if located in the Shelf.

To have the possibility to collapse the vertical area dedicated to
applications would a plus.
To me, the focus should be put first on the Shelf (horizontal part)
where you can put everything you are working on (what makes the basis
of the workflow). When you work a document with a particular tool,
you may want to collapse the vertical part and just keep the
horizontal part visible if you take in account this area can be used
to access all related documents, to store clippings and move them in
another document or the same.

How would you call the vertical area where plugins are located?
What is the Dock box?
How would be used the clipboard plugin? To me, the Shelf plays the
role of clipboard in a more generic way (drag/drop, pick/drop), then
the clipboard should be represented as a stack rather than a plugin
in the vertical area.

In your idea, do you plan to allow any elements (folders, documents,
clippings) to be put in this Shelf area as it was planned for Étoilé?

I think it would be better to have the audio player controls
displayed in a more standard shape (not vertically stretched by
default).
