Hello everybody,

first of all I think I have to introduce myself:

I am 22 y.o. computer science student from the Czech Republic, but I'm
studying at England (Coventry) this year.

Welcome.

I have already finished one part of task analysis/new interface concepts
description. I have used background from Jesse, it looks really good -
thanks.

You can have a look at: http://www.stud.fit.vutbr.cz/~xcapmi00/etoile/

These screenshots are very good
and really help us to solidify the UI design for Etoile.
I also think how we are going to implement these UI components.
Therefore, I start another thread to discuss UI design from a
practical point of view.

First, we think everyone agree that we only need an official UI.
Therefore, any other design is undocument or unofficial.
It can exist through customization or theme if little effort is need,
but not officially supported.

I think most people will agree the top space belongs to menu and menulet.
We just need to decide the style of menu some time later,
probably stays as horizontal menu as official one.

It leave us: docked files and applications (app launcher), shelf, trash can,
application icon (running applications), desktop icon (icons shows on desktop),
workspace switcher.
So the questions are:
1. Do we need icons on desktop ? It is usually part of file manager.
2. How many default tabs do we need and what are they for ?
We can have one for docked file and applications, and running applications.
What would be the rest for ? Also for docked files and applications ?
If there is an application A on tab 1 and application B on tab 2,
when both of them are running, do we keep them on their own tab ?
In that case, users have to remember which application is on which tab
in order to switch between them.
Switching between tabs costs one extra click.
3. Should we keep trash can on the shelf ?
We can have action for trash can in menu, ex. "Trash this document".
But we still need a place to open trash can folder in order to
recover certain files.
File manager probably will have an place for trash can.
So the question is do we need another one somewhere on the desktop ?
4. Where does workspace swithcer goes ? Now, you can use keyboard
through Azalea.
Do we need a visual aide to know which workspace users are ?
AZDock currently use contextual menu for that.
Therefore, there is no visual hints about which workspace users are
unless you right-click on the GNUstep icon of AZDock.
It is one-click extra to know where you are.

Expose-style stuff may help, but it is another issue.
I think the most complicated one is docked files
and applications and running applications and shelf.

Comments ?

I would like to add questionnaire soon to gather same research data
about user's opinions about it.
BTW. All the screenshots there are made in Inkscape, which quite
surprised me - it is really powerful tool now :)

My deadline for that is in three weeks ( bad time management :-( ), so
unfortunately I need to keep it short and simple.

I'm looking forward to any feedback or comments.

Thanks,
Michal Cap
