I hope so. GNUstep with art backend uses a special font format called nfont. I have been thinking about the various possibilities to package more fonts when you take in account this particular point. nfont spec: <http://web.telia.com/~u42308495/alex/GNUspec/ nfont_packages.txt> Here are the various options I can think of: 1) Include some fonts converted to nfont format inside a Fonts directory of Étoilé repository or inside a Fonts archive which is available for download outside of the repository 2) Include some fonts in such Fonts directory or archive and take care of their conversion to nfont format with a tool 3) Download some fonts if internet is available when setup.sh is run and convert them on the fly to nfont format with a tool 4) Look for fonts already installed on host system in standard directories and convert them to nfont format with a tool We can choose one or several options in the ones detailed above. For conversion to nfont format, we probably need to use some sort of font description database like <http://wiki.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/ Fonts/fonts.conf> I'm not sure but this script <http://web.telia.com/~u42308495/alex/ make_ttf_nfont.sh> looks like a basic tool to convert TrueType to nfont. It won't take in account font family and all other niceties though. Option 1) looks like the easiest way for now. What do you think? In future, FontManager could offer the possibility to browse fonts located on remote server (as if they were local fonts) and make possible to install the ones you are interested in by a simple click. I don't know what's really going on with Cairo backend, whether nfont format is still the standard choice, if it isn't supported or if it is supported but not as the default format. This is the kind of stuff which might be impacted by text system rewrite which should happen with Google SoC this summer. I don't know a lot about font topic from a technical perspective, so any corrections or comments are really welcome. Any suggestions on the list of fonts you would like to see bundled with Étoilé? Perhaps a page dedicated to Fonts in Étoilé should be added on the website? Cheers, Quentin. _______________________________________________ Etoile-discuss mailing list [email protected] https://mail.gna.org/listinfo/etoile-discuss
