Just for the record, you are welcome to implement whatever you like.  If you 
implement an iMessage clone, which has a nice groupchat facility, has clients 
covering OS X, iOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Android and Windows, and is 
feature-comparable with a modern IRC client, we may even consider using it.
