are you running a font server that can DO truetype? not all can.
I don't think the default debian one does.

neither are truetype fonts.  I think you are blowing up X by feeding it
fonts it can't handle.

try:

apt-get install xfs-xtt
or apt-get install xfstt

and
apt-get fttools
