The problem is real estate. Basically, you're trying to cram Texas into
Rhode Island. That's why you need the virtual resolution--it
artificially increases your desktop size. I doubt that you would want
any higher physical resolution on your monitor because you couldn't see
anything--it would be too small. You only have so much monitor space to
work with.
Unfortunately, most applications assume at least 800x600, so that's why
you have the virtual resolution.
I would say get a better monitor if you can. I think that's the
long-term solution. You might be able to get a physical resolution of
800x600 out of your current monitor, but I think anything beyond that is
pushing the technology too far.
