check out man tar or man gunzip
tar -zxvf blah.tar.gz then follow the README or INSTALL or such directions
to take it from there.
you can also gunzip blah.tar.gz then tar xvf blah.tar if you want.
also, good to put the file in a new directory before unzipping.
